( Extract from the Evening Echo Article , Nov 02 )
The third annual Reardens Club All-Star awards takes place on Monday, November 10 at 7.30pm, with 45 hurlers and 45 footballers in contention to be recognised for their excellence in the senior championships this season.
The prestigious event will also see a Hurler and a Footballer of the Year selected, while a Camogie Player and Ladies Footballer of the Year will be announced too by special guest RTE presenter Marty Morrissey.
Players from nine clubs are in the mix for the hurling All-Stars, with Sarsfields (13 nominees), Glen Rovers (10) and Douglas (10) leading the way. All three clubs were rewarded in the previous two years of the scheme, with Eoin Cadogan (Douglas), Donal Cronin (Glen) and Daniel Kearney (Sars) vying for the Hurler of the Year.
Sarsâ Ãanna Martin and Ballymartleâs Darren McCarthy are going for their third club All-Stars in succession, while Daniel Kearney and Alan Cadogan made the 2013 best 15 and are nominated again. Danielâs twin brother William is also in contention for an award.
The footballer selection could see as many as nine teams recognised too, though county champions Ballincollig and Carbery Rangers, who were by far the two dominant sides across the summer, head up the list of nominees. John Hayes is the only player from either club who was picked in the All-Star team before, making the grade at wing-forward two years ago.
Championship top-scorer Hayes is up against Ballincollig pair Patrick Kelly and hard-running midfielder Ciarán OâSullivan for the Footballer of the Year.
To highlight how far Ballincollig have come this season, they didnât have any players nominated for club All-Stars before now. Damien Cahalane (Caslehaven), Paul Kerrigan and James Masters (Nemo), as well as Bishopstownâs Sam Oakes are the survivors from the 2013 All-Stars nominated again, with Cahalane after his third gong in a row.
The Reardens Club All-Stars take place from 7.30pm on Monday, November 10 at Reardens Bar, Washingon Street.
