Ballincollig 1-15 Ãire Ãg 0-11
In what has traditionally been a testing venue for Ballincollig over the years, MÃcheál Quealyâs Junior B team recorded a solid victory over Ãire Ãg in the 1st round of the Junior B Championship. Ballincollig took some time to settle but they were always a threat inside with Gavin OâCallaghan and Ronan Cambridge causing a lot of panic in the Ãire Ãg backline, and some frees in kickable positions calmed the nerves. Indeed, as the half progressed, Ballincollig were a little guilty of overplaying in the final third trying to work a goal when possibly taking a point wouldâve been the better option. JP OâLeary, John Connaughton and Tim Collins were beginning to win a lot of ball around the middle, and with OâCallaghan always showing and available, chances kept coming Ballincolligâs way and they led by, 0-9 to 0-6 at the break, with Ballincollig feeling they shouldâve had another score or two on the board.
Once Ballincollig got into a rhythm in the 2nd half, they took the game to the Ovens side , but again, some wasteful finishing was to prove frustrating. The Ballincollig backs though had tightened up on their markers, and Ãire Ãg were finding it difficult to get through the ranks. The game became a tough physical battle midway through the 2nd half with some big hits going in from Collins, Paul Desmond, Eoghan OâCallaghan and John OâDriscoll, with neither team giving an inch, but Ballincollig managed to get back on top of things and were dominant in the last quarter of the game. Cambridge was very unlucky to have a goal disallowed for a Ballincollig penalty, which was well saved by the Ãire Ãg keeper, but shortly after, OâCallaghan made amends when he rifled the ball to the net to put some daylight between the teams. Ballincollig knocked over some fine points after this, with OâCallaghan scoring a monster from out by the left wing, OâLeary capped a fine performance with a well-worked team point, and Rob Walsh tacked over the final score of the game with a long-range effort to see Ballincollig home. The Bs will now face Aghabullogue in the Quarter Finals.
Ballincollig: John Noonan; Paul Desmond, Eoghan OâCallaghan, MÃcheál Quealy; Paddy Lucey, Eoin Dineen, Ger Delaney; JP OâLeary (0-1), John Connaughton (0-1); Timothy Collins, John OâDriscoll, Rob Walshe (0-2, 0-1f); Gavin OâCallaghan (1-4, 0-1f), Ronan Cambridge (0-5), Daniel Barry (0-2, 0-2f).
