Great Start for Ballincollig U16 Hurlers
July 07, 2014
Under 16 Premier 1 Hurling Championship
Ballincollig 2-15 Na Piarsaigh 0-13
Ballincollig opened the scoring with a magnificent Eoin Reilly point in the 2nd minute and were unlucky not to goal soon after when both Shane Hogan and Daniel Murphy came close. Ballincollig continued to press and earned 2 frees which were converted by the excellent Robert Bourke. It was obvious from early on that Na Piarsaigh carried a major threat in centre forward Daniel Gunning and full forward Evan Sheehan and both combined to score the next 2 points.
It was 0-4 to 0-3 after 10 minutes when Robert Bourke blasted an unstoppble 20 metre free to the net. The teams traded points up to the interval with Ballincollig leading 1-9 to 0-7 at the break. Sean Walsh opened the scoring with a great point in the 2nd half but Na Piarsaigh enjoyed a good spell and reduced the deficit to 3 points. This was as close as they got however and with the entire Ballincollig backline performing strongly and Gearoid O'Donoghue thundering into the game at midfield the men in green were driving for home. An opportunist goal from Shane Hogan followed by a point from Colm Bohane stretched the margin to 7. Both teams exchanged points thereafter while Na Piarsaigh had one final chance but Gunnings shot was expertly saved by James O'Leary. Final score Ballincollig 2-15 Na Piarsaigh 0-13.
A great start for Ballincollig who continue to improve and were well worth their first ever victory over an excellent Na Piarsaigh team
