TIM MURPHY 1952-2014
Tim Murphy late of the powdermills died on Saturday March 22nd last after a period of illness.
He was a passionate member of Ballincollig Hurling & Football club and his death at the age of 62 was a shock to his family , friends and clubmates.
Tim first played with our club in the parish league of 1964 when he won his first trophy after his Village team defeated Carrigrohane in that years final. He won a Mid Cork under 14 hurling championship medal in 1966, a Junior hurling medal in 1974 and a Junior âBâ football championship medal with his club in 1977.
Tim was also an outstanding club administrator. He was club secretary in 1981 and was also a Junior football selector that year together with Billy Fitton, Sean McCarthy, Tom âThe Postâ Murphy RIP and Donie OâDonovan RIP when they masterminded the winning of County Junior Football Championship for Ballincollig . This started the drive for Intermediate success and Senior status which the club enjoys today.
In 1982 Tim was appointed P.R.O. of the newly formed Belle of Ballincollig Festival committee and such was the success of this committee and the Festival which raised £100,000 over the next 4 years that it gave the club officers the confidence to start a development in Timâs beloved Powdermills which now consists of a club pavilion and function room, dresssing rooms, 5 playing fields, three of which are floodlit, a gymnasium and a hurling alley.Today they stand as a monument to Tim and his club mates of that era , may they never be forgotten.
Tim continued to serve as Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Belle of Ballincollig
Festival committee at different times up The early 1990âs. He also got involved with the development of and became the first Treasurer of the Ranges Pitch & Putt club which is attached to Ballincollig G.A.A. club.
Truly a remarkable contribution by Tim to the club he loved.
To his wife Majella, his brothers sisters, nieces nephews and family we extend our deepest sympathy...
