THE county senior football championship final will be a repeat of the 2014 showdown between the winners Ballincollig and Carbery Rangers following contrasting semi-finals at Páirc Uí Rinn.

While Ballincollig pipped the defending champions Nemo Rangers by 1-10 to 2-6 in a gripping contest, Carbery Rangers easily disposed of the Avondhu challenge, romping to a 1-17 to 0-8 victory.

Now the pair square-up again at the same venue on Sunday week in a game preceded by the intermediate final between Bandon and Rockchapel, while the PIFC decider between Fermoy and Kiskeam will now take place on Sunday, October 23, with the junior final first on the bill.

Former Cork player John Hayes was the star of Carbery Rangers’ surprisingly easy 12-point success as he contributed 1-8, including scoring the goal from a first-half penalty.

Ballincollig relied on Cian Dorgan holding his nerve to dissect the uprights with his winning free a minute from the end of a tense encounter.

His manager Ned English was quick to praise the youngster.

“Winning comes down to the most mentally strong team in the end. Cian showed that with his free,” he told the Echo.

Now, Ballincollig meet up again with familiar opponents with the Rosscarbery club still chasing that historic breakthrough and a first senior county title.

“We all saw what they did to Avondhu in the other semi-final. I wasn’t a bit surprised in the slightest because they are a serious outfit.

“We’re under no illusion about what awaits us in the final. We’ve got to a county final, nothing else for the moment,” English added.
