Congratulations

Congratulations to Ballincollig Camogie U12s on winning their County Final against Milford in Castle Road last Sunday. Many of the girls playing for Ballincollig have brothers and parents involved in the Juvenile Section and we congratulate them on their achievement.

U10 Séamus Fry Hurling Tournament Winners

Our U10s had a fantastic day out last Saturday in Co. Kilkenny at the famed James Stephens Hurling Club. This year, for the first time, the Ballincollig U10s were invited to take part in the Annual Séamus Fry Hurling Tournament. This was the 26th year of the event which commemorates Séamus Fry, the late Club President of James Stephens. The other Clubs participating were James Stephens (hosts), Dicksboro (Co. Kilkenny) and Sixmilebridge (Co. Clare).

Ballincollig played 6 matches, facing Dicksboro (many of whom won All Ireland Community Games medals earlier this summer) in the first 2, Sixmilebridge in the second 2 games and James Stephens in the final 2. Ballincollig won all 6, becoming the first Cork Club to win the Séamus Fry Cup. The standard of play was very high with the Ballincollig lads playing some fine hurling against tough opposition. It was a great experience for the boys, coaches and parents.

Throughout the day the boys behaved impeccably and were a credit to their Club, their parents and themselves. Many thanks to James Stephens for inviting us to take part in their tournament and for the great welcome they provided us. Thanks also to the many parents who travelled on the day to transport the lads to Kells Road, Co. Kilkenny. Finally, a special word of thanks to our members who do the background work in the club that allows our players to go on trips like this.

This weekend the U10s have 2 teams playing football away to St. Michaels and 2 teams playing football away to Bride Rovers on Saturday and travel to Sarsfields Hurling Club in Riverstown on Sunday morning where they have been invited to take part in the Annual Donal Buckley Memorial U10 Hurling Tournament. We wish the boys well in their hurling and football matches this weekend.

U6s

Our U6s hosted a Hurling Blitz in brilliant sunshine last Saturday. The U6s played 4 matches in total against Éire Óg and Ballinora with some fantastic hurling on display. Well done to all the boys, the hard work in training is paying off and remember to keep up the practice, practice, practice!

U11s

Irish places names have long provided the inspiration for popular song titles, from Oasis (Cigarettes and Annuscaul) to Pulp (Roscommon People) to Journey (Don’t Stop in Leitrim). The stand out however, must be the timeless 60’s hit from The Mamas and The Papas, who took one look at the green hills around Waterfall and wrote their classic, Ballinora Dreaming. Ballinora, along with Bantry, called to play two games of football on Saturday. Closely contested and hard fought, some of the play –moving the ball up the pitch, getting the basics of marking and fielding right – reflected the effort the players put in to their drills in training. Killian Santos and Luka Lavelic worked hard up front each creating goals. Finn Murphy performed solidly in goal, ably protected by Tiernan O’Callaghan. Jack O’Sullivan and Conor Cogan showed great leadership, and Zack McGinn put in a great days work, culminating in a fine score from a difficult position. Next up is Carrigtwohill away on Saturday morning, which my phone autocorrected to Carrantouhill. Now that would have been an uphill struggle. (Niall Murphy)

Cork GAA Club Draw

The new series of Monthly GAA Club Draws commence in October and you can join by calling to the Club for a brochure, go online at www.corkgaadraw.ie or contact the Juvenile Committee. The Draw benefitted the Juvenile/Youth Development Section to the tune of €5000 in 2019, a very valuable source of income which greatly helps in the running of the Juvenile Section.
