U21 FL defeat by slimmest of margins amid tremendous excitement 2014-02-12 16:56:00

Ballincollig 0-13  Naomh Abán 2-8

Our U21 footballers suffered a narrow defeat in their opening league game last Sunday morning in Ballincollig. Although it was a disappointing result in the end it was a most entertaining contest. The format of the competition has slightly changed this year and the championship will not commence until March.

Luke Prendergast opened the scoring for Ballincollig after we enjoyed a bright opening period. Naomh Abán replied with a well taken goal which was scored slightly against the run of play. Cian Dorgan popped over our second point while Shane Murphy was denied a goal by an excellent save.  The aforementioned Cian Dorgan got our third while Morgan O’Mahony got the equaliser at the end of a lively opening quarter. Luke Prendergast had an outstanding game and he put us in front for the first time with an excellent point. However, Ballyvourney went in front with two well taken points.

Cian Dorgan clipped over a placed effort before landing an outstanding point from out on the wing. Dorgan superbly found Luke Prendergast who bisected the uprights. Although we missed a number of chances the management team would have been pleased with the score line, 0-9 to 1-3 at the break.

Naomh Abán got the opening two scores of the second half while Dorgan and Luke Prendergast replied with two well executed points from Ballincollig. Morgan O’Mahony was denied a goal by another outstanding save while another placed effort from Cian Dorgan gave us a two point lead.

Naomh Abán were awarded a penalty which they converted and they went ahead with a well taken point from play. Luke Prendergast landed a placed effort which put us ahead by a single point. The final minutes were extremely exciting as Ballyvourney landed an equalising score with a couple of minutes to play. Unfortunately, we squandered a couple of half chances to go ahead and Ballvourney landed the winner deep in injury-time.

Although we were missing a number of players through injury the result was naturally disappointing. We have entered two teams in this grade for the championship so there will be real competition for places as the season progresses. Due to the terrible weather conditions, the Tadgh Crowley Cup final was cancelled and will be played at a later date.
