Senior Footballers book their place in Tadgh Crowley Cup Final 2014-02-05 22:45:00

Ballincollig 1-9  Newcestown 0-5
Our senior footballers are through to the final of the Tadgh Crowley Cup this weekend following a convincing victory over Newcestown in Ballincollig last Saturday night. We dominated the opening exchanges and well taken scores from Johnny Kelly and Alan Donovan settled our side. Liam Jennings was playing his first game of the new season and he marshalled the defence superbly in the opening quarter.

Both our midfielders Sean Kiely and Ciaran O’Sullivan were heavily involved in the opening half and a powerful run from O’Sullivan resulted in a penalty. Cian Dorgan made no mistake from the penalty spot and also impressed in general play. JP Murphy also registered an excellent score and his marauding runs are a real positive for the team.

Although we dominated possession in the opening half Newcestown did slip in for a couple of cheap scores. At the same time we finished out the opening half strongly with points from Cian Dorgan and David Bowen. Stephan O’Donoghue has also been very strong at centre-back and he found Alan Donovan for a lovely score just before the break. Considering the conditions and slippery pitch the management would have been pleased with a 1-6 to 0-2 lead at the break.

The second half was less competitive although Newcestown restored some pride with a couple of nice points. We introduced a number of substitutes who all made valuable contributions. John Miskella as a great leader for the team and his clever use of possession can be invaluable going forward. Rob Noonan was very commanding while Dylan Kirstein has real natural talent and has impressed so far this season.

Sean Kiely powered forward on a regular basis and he kicked an excellent score while the hard working Johnny Kelly clipped over a placed effort to finish off an excellent evening. The final takes place Saturday afternoon in Clonakility and all support is welcome. The opposition  is Carberry Rangers who have got the better of us on a couple of occasions in recent years. A victory in this pre season competition would be a perfect platform for the league and championship.
