Juvenile/Youth Development Section AGM

The Juvenile/Youth Development Section 2019 AGM will now take place on this Wednesday 22nd January, 2020 in the Club. All Members are encouraged to attend.

Many Thanks

As this is my last week compiling the Juvenile Section Notes as the Juvenile Section PRO, I’d like to thank everyone in the Juvenile Section who has assisted me over the last couple of years. Thanks to the many groups, Managers and coaches who took the time to send photos and match reports to me for the Ballincollig Newsletter and for the Club Social Media platforms. The Club’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages are very active, have large followings and are very useful tools for communication for the Club.

For our many young players, their parents and families, our Members, our supporters and for the Ballincollig community in general, the publication of photos and reports promoting our games and our culture and promoting the good work being undertaken in our Club is of huge importance. I encourage those who do submit reports and photos to the Juvenile PRO to keep doing so in 2020 and encourage all groups to do so. There are very exciting times ahead for our Club - both on the playing fields and with regard to our Club Development. These are ‘good news’ stories and the role of promoting them to a wider audience is an important one.

Finally, I wish the new Juvenile PRO the very best of luck for the coming year. Thanking you all, Brian Costello, PRO Juvenile Section.

Practice At Home (Hurling & Football)

Our games are primarily about enjoyment and development but to ensure the boys are having fun and continue to enjoy their training and matches, we strongly advise all parents to encourage their boys to practice at home. Movement and ball manipulation skills should be developed in the early years of physical development to provide the basis for all further development.

▪ At home all you need is a hurley, a ball and a wall to improve your hurling. For football all you need is the football and the wall. The basic skills of the games, primarily striking/kicking, catching and touch can all be worked on against a wall.

▪ Kicking the ball and catching the rebound repeatedly will definitely improve your boy's football skills. Encourage kicking with both feet. Doing this repeatedly for 10/15mins will see your boys skills and movement enhanced.

▪ Striking the ball against the wall with a hurley and controlling the rebound or catching the ball will definitely improve hurling skills. The mantra of hurley, ball, wall is a common one with the top players of the game. Encourage striking off both sides repeatedly.

▪ Daily contact with a hurley/football will increase the boys movement while enhancing their skills (a win-win situation).
