Senior Football: Tight encounters with Douglas and Nemo

April 13, 2016

Senior Football
The senior footballers took on Douglas at home in the league recently, and added to their tally of draws.

Such an outcome looked unlikely early, as we stormed into proceedings and raised the first six white flags of the game. John Miskella was to the fore in this period, popping up all over the forward line and scoring regularly. Colin Moore and Sean Lucey were excellent at the back, while Cian Kiely added pace on the break and Rob Noonan also provided a scoring threat.

As the half wore on, Douglas drew more and more men into their defence, stifling our attack while also managing to get off the mark themselves. The second half was interrupted for ten minutes following a sickening accidental clash of heads between a player of either side, and our lads struggled to regain their momentum on the resumption. Still, a win looked likely until Douglas launched a high ball towards the square with ten minutes remaining and it was punched to the net by their full forward. The game was in the balance then, and it took a late free from John Miskella to make sure of the draw. Score: Ballincollig 0:10 Douglas 0:10.

Last Tuesday night we made the short trip to Nemo Rangers for another league game. As with all our games this year, this was again a tight encounter. We started well, with Rob Noonan firing over a pair of points from distance but Nemo were always dangerous and a run of points had the scores level at 5 each after twenty minutes. They edged ahead before half time but the deficit was recovered by the break as the teams adjourned on seven points apiece.

Liam Jennings, Chris Collins and Colin Moore were rock solid in the defence while Dave Tobin and Kevin Browne worked hard in the forward line throughout a finely balanced second half. It was 0-10 each with ten minutes remaining when John Kelly swung proceedings our way with two excellent points. We added a third to go a goal ahead and while Nemo fought back they were still a point short when the final whistle went. Score: Ballincollig 0:13 Nemo Rangers 0:12

Ballincollig men in the County Colours
Last week was also an excellent week for our representatives in the county colours. Robbie Bourke got the ball rolling with an outstanding performance for the Cork minor hurlers in their win in Waterford. Cian Dorgan, Cian Kiely and Sean Lucey were then part of the Cork under 21 football panel which won the Munster football final. Particular congratulations are due to Cian Dorgan, who struck the winning point in injury time.
